Chocolate Rum Balls

When I was a kid my mom and I would spend days in the kitchen leading up to Christmas. We’d make containers and containers full of cookies and squares. My mom always made sure that we’d bake everyone’s favourite treat, plus we’d always have to try a few new recipes too.

We’d assemble plates of assorted Christmas cookies and squares to give as gifts to friends, teachers, and anyone who had become special to a Romano like the soccer coach or even our family doctor! If someone mentioned one year what their favourite cookie or square was, my mom would make a mental note and be sure to have them the following year. The list was always long and each Christmas we’d try to cut back without much success.

I always hated making two recipes in particular (for some reason), rum balls and some kind of cookie that looked like a football. I think at the time these Christmas treats were my least favourite and were labour intensive when I didn’t enjoy eating them.  Why bother when you don’t get much bang for your buck?! But we always made them because my brother Jer loved rum balls and my brother Matt loved these other things (I will remember the name of them, I will…).

It’s funny now as I’m making my list of what I want to bake for Christmas, all I can think about are those rum balls. Maybe I’m feeling more nostalgic than usual?! I’d make those football cookies too but I’m pretty sure I still don’t care for them! lol. My mom no longer has the recipe but this one is close to what I remember. Except I find these rum balls much more chocolatey than rummy, but I’m not sure that’s a bad thing?!

So this year I find my Christmas cookie platter smaller than usual but filled with some old favourites (I never thought I’d be rolling rum balls in cocoa again!).

Oh and those football cookies go by other names, Russian tea cakes or Mexican wedding cookies.

Do you have any favourite Christmas cookies from your childhood?
