Making a birthday cake for your pup may seem silly, but heck life is too short not to be! This little cutie is One! I can’t believe how quickly time is flying by. Sophie brings me so much joy and I just love having her around. To celebrate her special day I thought I’d bake her an all-natural, homemade dog birthday cake! I love baking for my family, and she’s part of my family, so why not?! This cake has been ‘dog’ approved! Sophie loved it (just as much as she loves apples and carrots), especially the yogurt icing, that was the first thing to go! This might just become her new favourite treat!
We are having such a blast together; swimming at the beach, going for walks, playing catch, playing more catch and yes Sophie loves playing catch! She follows me everywhere; to the bathroom, up the stairs – down the stairs, and when I forget something and have to go back up the stairs, yup, Sophie is right there thumping behind me.
Ingredients
This is a simple recipe with simple ingredients that is dog-friendly. The key is to make sure to avoid ingredients with sugar and preservatives. And definitely make sure the peanut butter you are using doesn’t contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs also avoid any chocolate!
- All-purpose flour
- Baking soda
- Coconut oil
- Egg
- Canned pumpkin puree (make sure it’s not pumpkin pie puree)
- Chicken broth
- Peanut butter (all-natural)
- Plain yogurt or plain Greek yogurt
Sophie’s Birthday Bow-Tie
I wanted to add to the celebration by teaming up with my favourite dog shop – Rover Boutique. I discovered Rover Boutique at the One of a Kind Show and fell in love with Anne Marie’s work. She creates the most adorable bow tie collars and accessories for your furry best friend, like the Lake Tahoe Bow Tie Collar that Sophie is wearing!
Tips For Making The Homemade Perfect Dog Cake
- Use Dog-Friendly Ingredients: Make sure you are using all-natural ingredients without any added sugars. And definitely make sure the peanut butter you are using doesn’t contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
- Adjust Portion Size: Depending on your dog’s size, you can adjust the portion size of the cake. For smaller dogs, maybe consider making mini cakes or cupcakes using a muffin tin.
- Dog-Friendly Decorating: Plain yogurt icing is a great choice for decorating. You can also use dog-safe fruits like blueberries or strawberries for decoration.
- Storage Tips: Freezing slices of the cake! This is a convenient way to have treats ready for your pup without worrying about them spoiling.
- Avoid Overfeeding: While this cake is healthy, remember that treats should only make up a small part of your dog’s diet.
- Consult with a Vet: If your dog has any dietary restrictions or health concerns, it’s always a good idea to consult with your veterinarian before introducing new treats or recipes into their diet.
How To Make a Homemade Dog Cake
Step One: Make your cake batter in a medium-sized bowl; add your dry ingredients and mix well. Set aside. In a large bowl, add your wet ingredients and mix to combine. Add your dry ingredients to your wet ingredients and stir together. Divide the batter evenly into the prepared round cake pans. Place in the middle of the oven and bake for 20-25 minutes. Let cakes cool in pans for 5 minutes then transfer to a wire rack to completely cool. Layer the two cakes on top of each other.Â
Step Two: Decorate the top of the cake with plain yogurt as your frosting and for an extra touch decorate with blueberries and or strawberries.

FAQ’s
Please note I’m not a veterinarian. If you have any concerns about your dog’s diet check with your vet. My Sophie does have a lot of dietary issues and one tip I was given by a veterinarian was; if the dog food you are giving your pup has the ingredients in it then it’s safe.
It’s best to avoid using regular cake ingredients like chocolate, sugar, and artificial sweeteners in a dog cake or any treat at that. Stick to dog-friendly ingredients such as pumpkin, peanut butter, plain yogurt, and dog-safe fruits.
Yes, it’s generally safe to use human-grade flour like all-purpose flour or whole wheat flour in a dog cake. However, some dogs may have allergies or sensitivities to certain grains, so you may want to be cautious (and if so use grain-free flour). If the dog food you feed your pup has grains in the ingredients you should be fine. It’s always best to check with your veterinarian if you are unsure.
The amount of cake you can feed your dog depends on their size and dietary needs. Treats like dog cake should be given in moderation and should not replace their regular balanced meals. Consult with your veterinarian for guidance on portion sizes.
